5 Tips For Looking Better In Pictures

iPiccy photo editor is capable of many great things (you could check our other blogposts to see!) However, there are some things it can’t change or it looks tacky to change, and that’s what goes on when taking the picture. So here are some tips for looking better in pictures!

Take A Lot Of Pictures

Is it possible that this picture was taken in one take? Sure. Is it likely? No. If this shot was taken outside, you’re dealing with factors like wind and sunlight. If it’s indoors, you’re dealing with a prop background that can cause problems, or maybe a whole lighting setup.

The lesson here is to shoot a lot of photos, keep a few, and edit fewer! It’s simply casting a wider net to increase your chances of taking the picture you want. It’s silly to think that models would come to a photo shoot and only take one picture and call it a day, isn’t it? So you should plan to take a lot of pictures, changing your angle, casting a different light, different poses, and just trying new things. This allows you to pick the cream of the crop, and compare to your lesser photos, so you know that you have a good base to start with before photo editing.

Wear The Right Clothes

Wearing the right clothes doesn’t necessarily mean suits, dresses, and other formal wear. It means clothes that you feel confident in and fit the situation.

There is a reason you feel more confident in your favorite outfit. It’s likely because that outfit fits perfectly, and hugs you in all the right places, doesn’t it? It’s also very probable that it is a color that appeals to you and looks great on you. All of those things usually combine for a confident spirit in that outfit.

Though it is worth noting to wear wrinkle free and well-fitted clothes because wrinkly or baggy clothes can add significant weight to you in pictures.

Keep The Background Simple

Solid Background

If you’re not trying to accentuate the background, why make it complicated right? Another thing to keep in mind is that you want the background to contrast the subject, so if you’re the subject make sure not to pick a background that has similar colors and tones to anything you’re wearing, your hair color, or your skin. Notice the background in the above picture is mainly a solid out of focus brown, and contrasts with the overall light colors.

Lighting

Any professional will tell you that lighting can change the entire tone of a picture with just the slightest tilt of a lamp. Don’t believe me? Check out this video.

That doesn’t mean everyone needs to have a professional lighting kit though, you simply have to be conscious of the light available during your shoot, and what it does to your look. If a light is too harsh and exposing wrinkles and pores in your face, soften it. If you’re not accentuating a certain feature of yours enough, try and focus the light on that feature.

Have Fun

Yes, I know it’s a little cliché to say having fun will produce a better picture, but it really does. It’s usually easy to see when someone was too stiff and rigid while having their picture taken. Their smile is forced or expressionless, eyes look bored, or the picture just seems unnatural. So do whatever it is you need to do to loosen up a bit, whether that be music in the background, dancing a bit, or just acting a little crazy, it’s worth it to get a good natural smile.

So what are you waiting for? Go out, start taking some great pictures, and bring them back to work on in iPiccy!
